My Story
My name is John, and I'm a retired Navy Submarine veteran with a somewhat random sports background. I grew up downhill ski racing and was also a member of the National Ski Patrol for the mountain I grew up skiing on. I've lifted weights much of my life (including crossfit), and was, honestly, until I found triathlon, a reluctant runner. During my Navy career, I played both 8-man tackle football while stationed in California as well as club rugby for Virginia Beach.
My triathlon journey started just over 5 years ago. I began triathlon because I wanted to challenge myself to do something that I knew would be tough and was different from anything I had ever done in the past. In the beginning, I could not even swim the full length of a 25-yard swimming pool. In an Ironman 70.3 race (1/2 the distance of a full Ironman), I will now swim 1.2 miles! I've always enjoyed biking, but have truly come to love running as well!
I am a certified 80/20 endurance coach and the principles of 80/20 training are fundamental to my coaching philosophy. What does that mean? In effect, the principles of 80/20 reflect the idea that an athlete spends most (80%) of their training at a relatively easy pace, and some (20%) training at a hard pace. Check out my BLOG Fundamentals of 80/20 Endurance Training for more on those training principles. As importantly to my training philosophy, is my commitment to you as an individual athlete. No one but you understands the challenges that you have gone through in the past, or may be going through today. Regardless of what your personal challenges are, I will work with you to achieve your goals and finish what we started together. The only “ask” I have of you, is to trust and follow the process. I would love to meet you and hear about your endurance journey! Complete the inquiry form today.
